What is awg?

AWG, an abbreviation for American Wire Gauge, is the system for rating the size of a conductor according to the U.S. standard. The AWG index is not only a convenient way to determine the wire size but is also closely related to the wire diameter. As the AWG index decreases, the wire diameter increases. This is because the AWG index is based on the number of times a metal strand has been drawn through a die. With each pass through the die, the diameter decreases, and the fewer the dies (smaller AWG), the larger the diameter.

The meaning of awg

Why do we need to learn about awg?

AWG is the unit that specifies the size of the cable core. Based on the wire cross-sectional area, we can determine different resistance values (also known as electrical impedance) that occur during signal transmission. The impedance index affects electrical power, signal sensitivity, and more. Moreover, when choosing a cable with a larger cross-sectional area (AWG), it results in higher electrical resistance, generating a significant amount of heat. High heat demands precise and professional manufacturing processes.

Factors to consider when chosing awg cable in practice

Several crucial factors need to be taken into consideration when selecting the awg cable size for specific applications:

  • The current: One of the key considerations is the current flowing through the wire. As the current intensity increases, using a larger awg wire is necessary to ensure efficient transmission performance and electrical safety.
  • Electrical loss: With a higher current flow, electrical losses also increase. Therefore, using a larger awg cable can help reduce electrical losses. This is particularly important for applications that require stable current.
  • Transmission distance: The transmission distance also influences the choice of awg cable size. As the distance increases, electrical losses also rise. Using a larger awg cable can minimize these losses, especially in scenarios with extended transmission distances.

Some of the most typical types of awg cables

AWG 18

According to the awg conversion table, awg 18 cable has a diameter of approximately 1.02 mm (or 0.0403 inches). This represents the diameter of the copper wire (values may vary depending on the manufacturer). AWG 18 wire is commonly used in small devices such as electronics, electrical circuits, and household appliances. This is because the diameter of this wire is smaller compared to other types, making it suitable for installations with relatively limited space. Additionally, awg 18 wire can handle high current intensities and exhibits good insulation properties, preventing interference during signal transmission.

Suitable for flexible applications with free movement, without tensile stress and without forced motion control in dry, damp, and wet rooms, however, not suitable for outdoor use. Used as control and signal cables for systems at risk of interference radiation. Due to the dense braided screening, interference through parallel running cables is suppressed and because of the pair stranding, favourable crosstalk attenuation values are achieved.
