3 Types of cables in the steel industry

3 types of cable for the steel industry

Steel production is one of the important industries when supplying raw materials to other industries. However, machinery and equipment in steel mills often operate with high power consumption, high-temperature environments, and some chemicals. These conditions require materials in steel mills such as electrical cables to have specifications to operate in harsh conditions.

Understanding this, at HELUKABEL, we provide specialized electrical cables for the steel industry, capable of performing well in high-temperature environmental conditions, oil and chemical resistant, and meet fire-resistant or flame-retardant standards, etc.

The potential of the steel industry in Vietnam

The steel manufacturing industry still has potential thanks to the disbursement of investment capital for major transport and construction projects in the country. According to the World Steel Association (WSA), world steel demand will also increase again in 2023 when public investment is promoted, and the energy shortage situation is under control.

Besides, investment orientation for infrastructure in ASEAN countries will lead to the growth of steel consumption demand. This direction will open up opportunities for the steel manufacturing sector in Vietnam. Therefore, to prepare well for the upcoming opportunities, manufacturing plants have been adjusting their production systems to achieve the highest productivity with automation technology.

Properties of the steel production environment

The steel factory specializes in using large-capacity equipment such as blast furnaces, transfer furnaces, casting machines, rolling lines, and continuous operation. In particular, high temperature is a factor throughout the steel production process, from the processing of input materials to the finishing step to create the final steel product. In principle, the specified temperature for alloy melting in the furnace is extremely high up to more than 1000°C. The temperature can be increased or decreased in some separate areas in the plant.

Why should the steel industry use heat-resistant control cables?

Control cables play the role of transmitting power or control signals in industrial plants. Therefore, the control cables must be able to meet the high-temperature industrial environment, especially the steel industry.

Control cables are equipped with durable materials that can withstand good heat, as well as the penetration of harmful substances such as oil, acids, alkalis, etc, to help protect the core and prolong the life of the control cables and maintain stable operation of the system.

In addition, heat-resistant control cables will help limit unwanted situations such as fire spread in a fire incident. With high-temperature resistance characteristics, the control cable can ensure a stable signal transmission level, avoiding signal flickering or interruptions, that situation will affect the entire production system in the steel plant.

3 types of heat resistant cables

SiHF control cables

(Part number: 23008/ increased temperature resistance, tinned wire)

Technical data:

Silicone control and connection cable in alignment with DIN VDE 0250-1, DIN VDE 0285-525-2-83 / DIN EN 50525-2-83.

Temperature range

  • flexible -25°C to +180°C
  • fixed -60°C to +180°C

Permissible operating temperature of the conductor +180°C

Nominal voltage AC U0/U 300/500 V

Test voltage core/core 2000 V

Breakdown voltage 4000 V

Minimum bending radius

  • flexible 7.5x Outer-Ø
  • fixed 4x Outer-Ø

Application

Silicone cables were evolved for use wherever insulation is subjected to extreme temperature changes. The good performance of the environmentally resistant properties means that silicone cables can be used at temperatures down to -60°C. Silicone cables are halogen-free cables and are especially suited for installation in power stations. They have also found their uses in the steel-producing industries, aviation industry, and shipbuilding as well as in ceramic, glass, and cement factories. Due to the elastic characteristic of core insulations, these are used as flexible connection cables.
