Profinet (often abbreviated as PROFInet, as an acronym for Process Field Net) is an industry technical standard for data transmission over industrial Ethernet, designed to collect data from and control equipment in industrial systems, with exceptional strength in delivering data under tight time constraints (on the order of 1 ms or less). This standard is maintained and supported by PROFIBUS & PROFInet International (PI), an organization based in Karlsruhe, Germany.
